Next-Gen Mercedes-AMG C63 Tipped To Get A Four-Cylinder Turbo Engine With Electrification

Mercedes is not only chasing after the booming SUV segments with all-new products, like the GLB, but is also looking to completely overhaul some of their AMG models.

It’s been said that some future top-of-the-line cars developed in Affalterbach will be electrified, and one of them seems to be the C63. Expected to launch in early 2022, the next generation premium compact vehicle will, according to Autocar, ditch the outgoing 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 completely, in favor of the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine found in the new 45 lineup.

Mercedes-AMG M139 engine

Codenamed the M139, it produces as much as 421 PS (415 hp / 310 kW) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque in the A45 S and CLA 45 S. However, in the C63, it’s said to be hybridized, thus pushing the output to over 500 horsepower. The mill was developed so that it can be mounted both transversely and longitudinally, and could eventually find its way in the successor of the outgoing C43, albeit in a de-tuned form. Other AMGs that might adopt it are the GLC 43 and 63 SUV and Coupe, and GLC 63 SUV and Coupe.

With the new C63, Mercedes-AMG will continue to challenge the likes of the BMW M3, M4 Coupe and M4 Convertible, as the car is expected to be offered in saloon, coupe and cabriolet body styles. Nonetheless, the estate is believed to be dropped from the lineup, so they won’t rival Audi’s RS4 Avant anymore.

We reached out to Mercedes-AMG, which said that this information “is based on speculation and we do not comment on speculations”.
