'The Voice' Battle Rounds: This Adele duet will give you goosebumps

It’s Battle Rounds time on “The Voice,” which means it’s time for vocalists to have sing-offs inside a stage made to look like a boxing ring.

But this week, with coaches Blake Shelton, Adam Levine, Kelly Clarkson and newbie John Legend, the battles were more like loving duets than head-to-head duels.

Battle No. 7, in particular, had “a kindness to it,” as coach Legend said of his singers, Savannah Brister, 17, and Maelyn Jarmon, 26.

“You weren’t trying to out-sing each other,” he said, “You were trying to do the best you could do.”

And the best that they could do, in a duet of Adele’s “When We Were Young,” was gorgeous and goosebump-worthy. The song got an immediate standing ovation from Clarkson and then the rest of the coaches.

Brister, a high school senior with raw talent who’s deciding whether to pursue a career in music, and Jarmon, a trained vocalist with one of the best voices on the show (who happens to be deaf in one ear), made the Adele tune sound like a Disney soundtrack duet (similar to Legend’s “Beauty and the Beast”). They harmonized, added high notes and had a dramatic finish, as Legend waved his arm like a conductor from his chair.

Khalid, Legend’s “Voice” adviser, described the performance in rehearsal this way: “I can feel it and it’s chilling and makes you want to cry.”

Ditto.

Ultimately, Legend named Jarmon the battle winner. Though Brister wasn’t stolen by any other coaches, she became the first singer of the Battle Rounds to appear on Bebe Rexha’s “Comeback Stage,” where she gets another chance to compete in battles available online.
